Booking a fishing charter  for some is a once a year experience, for others a once in a lifetime experience. Which ever category you fall into, you will want to make the most of it. Half day, all day, reef fishing, night shark fishing, large off-shore fishing. To get the most out of your trip there are several things you need to consider, first it is always best to book the captain and boat as far in advance as possible. This will assure the availability of captain and boat. It also gives the Captain a chance to plan the trip to your specifications. Keeping this in mind, I must tell you, that most fishing trips are done on the spur of the moment with good daily fishing results, however it is still best to consult with the captain to find out what's biting, where, and what to expect on your custom charter.

Different times of the year will produce different results, but you have a chance to catch a trophy fish any time of the year if you have a line in the water. Most people are very surprised when it comes to the price of chartering a big boat, until they talk to a friend that owns a sport fishing boat. Most charter boats break even at the end of the year due to the costs associated with operating a productive sport fishing boat. They do it for the love of the sport. You can just imagine what it would cost to drive all day, around a city in a taxi which has better fuel consumption, no experienced captain and crew, no expensive fishing gear, no major electronics, no mooring cost, little maintenance, low insurance cost and the driver only speaks a little English. Try it in any major city and let me know which is the better deal! When you are booking a charter boat, you are hiring an awesome piece of equipment with top of the line gear, along with an experienced captain and crew that are out there all day trying to catch a trophy fish for you. When they do, they will be basking in the charter's success and the glory of the day along with you. If we do not catch, we all do the walk of shame back to the harbor. So you see, a lot of factors go in to the cost of a charter. The crew works hard to catch fish, take care of you, the boat, and gear. You need to take care of the crew if you think they did their job well. The income of the crew is comprised mainly of the sale of fish and your appreciation of their craft. A 10-20 % gratuity is customary, not mandatory, but greatly appreciated. The fish policy varies from boat to boat, but most boats will let you take some fish home. You will not be able to sell fish caught on a commercial charter boat, but you should get enough fish for dinner.

Fishing on a charter boat it is a group effort. Somebody drives the boat and finds the fish (or the fish finds you). Somebody reels in the fish (or gets spooled). Somebody leaders the fish (or breaks leader). Somebody
gaffs the fish (or loses the fish), all a team effort. Ok, you were the angler and did a good job, but you had a lot of help (help here is good). To be ready for your adventure, the day before buy your food and beverage: donuts, sandwiches, chips, water, soda, beer, no bananas there BAD LUCK!

Check to see that you have comfortable clothing, shorts and T-shirts, a hat, polarized sun glasses, sunscreen, light windbreaker, camera, and motion sickness medication the night before and the morning of the trip. If you really want to be on top the day of the charter, go to bed early, and stay out of the bars the night before. Why spend the chance of a life time sleeping it off. In the morning when you arrive the crew will greet you and help stow your gear. The captain will give a short safety brief and introduction to the boat. As soon as the boat is out of the harbor the deckhand will be setting the lines and you will be deep sea fishing for Marlin, Mahi Mahi (Dolphin), Ono (Wahoo), Ahi (Tuna), and what ever else comes to bite. The deckhand will give a brief demonstration on how to use the gear, but don't worry no prior experience required. Once we have a fish on the line the deckhand will coach you through the procedure to boat the fish, it may get a little chaotic, but when the fish is in the boat, it will be all congratulations!

We all want to catch a big fish, but if you love fishing, the best part is being out there on the beautiful water, under the blue sky, warm sun, with the chance to catch a trophy. Enjoy the ocean and its many awesome residents, enjoy the warm sun, enjoy the tranquility of beauty, and enjoy the explosion of a monster fish, When it happens, it is Great!! If you land a trophy fish that you would like to have mounted, talk to your captain regarding preserving your trophy for mounting and shipping.

Thank you,
Capt. Bill Ward
